The University of Madras was established on September 5, 1857, and located at Chepauk, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The University is a public state university and the second oldest university in India after the University of Calcutta. Madras University offers various Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), Ph.D., M.Phil., Diploma, PG Diploma, and Certificate courses under various University Teaching Departments (UTD). There are 19 schools and 83 teaching departments under these schools in the University. Madras University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). This University imparts both Under Graduate and Post Graduate education through the Affiliated Institutions which are spread over the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, and Kancheepuram. Madras University was organized in the model of London University. This University is the mother of almost all the old Universities of south India. It also offers both Under Graduate and Post Graduate programs through the Institute of Distance Education.
