UG Courses
Students are taken in for the undergraduate courses through the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE) conducted by CBSE, New Delhi. Around one million students wrote this test in 2009 to gain admission to one of 20 NITs. This makes it one of the largest such examinations in the world. Admission to some other autonomous national level technical institutes (called Deemed University) is also through AIEEE.

B.Tech / B Arch

Admission Requirements

Candidates should have passed 10+2 or any other course recognized by CBSE as equivalent,with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as subjects and should have qualified All IndiaEngineering Entrance Examination (For details refer www.aieee.nic.in). Candidates belongingto Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes are required to secure the minimum pass marks in thequalifying examination.

Request for Change of Branch

Change of Branch will be offered strictly based on AIEEE rank subject to eligibility and availability.

Physical Requirements Common to all the NITs
An engineering student should fulfill certain minimum conditions of physical fitness as prescribed by the Government of India. It is desirable to have the following medical standards for admission to all the NITs.

Height: Not less than 150 cm for male and not less than 140 cm for female candidates.
Weight: Not less than 41 kg for male and not less than 37 kg for female candidates.
Chest: Not less than 69 cm with satisfactory limits of expansion & contraction.
Heart & Lungs: No abnormality.
Hernia, Hydrocele, Piles etc.: To be rectified before joining, if these are present.
Vision: Normal. In case of defective vision, it must be corrected to 6/9 in both the eyes or 6/6 in the better eye.
Candidates seeking admission to Mining Engineering must be free from colourblindness.
Hearing: Normal, where defective it must be corrected.
Physique: Good.

Note: Candidates are required to produce at the time of counselling, a Certificate of Physical Fitness.
Documents to be submitted during the time of reporting for institute admissions

The Originals of the following documents have to be brought at the time of reporting for admissions:

  • candidates. (In case of SC/ST/OEC category two copies of ORIGINAL COMMUNITY Certificate as one copy is required for Scholarship purpose)
  • Income and Nativity Certificate in case of SC/ST/OEC candidates from Kerala for Scholarship purpose.
  • Community certificate in the case of OBC candidates from a competent authority (not below the rank of a Tahsildar) indicating the status regarding Creamy Layer#.

Qualification prescribed for admission: The minimum academic qualification for admission is a pass in the final examination of 10 + 2 or its equivalent as specified in AIEEE 2010 or any other examination equivalent to 10+2 level approved by Association of Indian Universities for Graduate Studies in India.

Age Limit: The maximum age for admission to B.Tech. / B.Arch. programme is 25 years as on October 1st of the year. Date of birth as recorded in the Secondary Education Board/University Certificate only will be taken as authentic.

Hostel facilities: Available for boys and girls.

  • Admission offer issued by Ministry of External/Cultural Affairs, GOI.
  • Fee receipt towards tuition fee paid to Ministry of External/Cultural Affairs, GOI. In case of candidates coming under self financing scheme, the DD for the required amount[$ 4000 (US $2000 for SAARC)] towards the tuition fee drawn in favour of ” Director, NIT Calicut” payable at Calicut.
  • 10th standard / Matriculation or equivalent certificate in original.
  • Original mark sheet and Pass certificate of the qualifying examination.
  • Original School Leaving / Transfer Certificate from the Institution last attended.
  • Original Character and Conduct Certificate from the Institution last attended.

PG Courses
Admission to the graduate M.Tech courses are primarily based on scores in the GATE exam, conducted by the IITs.

MTech / MSc Courses
ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION TO M.Tech. PROGRAMMES

Candidates for admission to M.Tech. Degree Programme shall be required to have passed the four-year regular full time B.E./B.Tech. Degree with 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) in aggregate in the qualifying examination together with a valid GATE SCORE and for SC/ST candidates 50% marks (CGPA 5.5/10) in aggregate with a valid GATE SCORE in the discipline/branch given below. Candidates under lateral entry should have passed the three year diploma in engineering with first class and SC/ST candidate with second class.


Final semester students with a valid GATE score can also apply provided their final semester marks are made available within three months from date of joining. Such candidates may be considered for provisional admission.

However, these candidates must have successfully passed with 60% mark (6.5 CGPA) in one to six semesters of B.Tech./ B.E. or three years of Engineering studies on the date of application and the application must include attested copies of the mark lists and course completion certificate from the Head of the Institution last attended in the prescribed format. These candidates must have successfully passed the seventh semester examination/ third year of engineering on the date of admission and shall produce the original mark lists including seventh semester/ third year.

Any candidate admitted provisionally, subject to his/her producing provisional certificate and mark lists as proof of having satisfied the eligibility criteria, shall have to discontinue the course, if he/she does not produce the provisional certificate and mark lists within three months from the date of joining. Such candidates will not be eligible for any refund of fees paid by him/her. Provisional admission is not applicable to candidates who have failed in the qualifying examination and subsequently appeared for the supplementary examination. Part-time degree holders are not eligible for admission.

ELIGIBILILTY FOR ADMISSION TO M.Sc.(Tech.) PROGRAMMES
Integrated M.Sc.(Tech.) Degree Programme in ‘Mathematics and Scientific Computing’ leading to Ph.D. degree in Mathematics:
B.Sc. Degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics / B.Tech. Degree (any discipline) with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10). [For SC/ST candidates 50% (CGPA 5.5/10)]

M.Sc.(Tech.) – Photonics:
Bachelor’s degree with Physics main and Mathematics subsidiary OR Bachelor’s degree through Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics (three main system) with 60% marks (6.5/10CGPA) OR B.Tech degree in Electronics, Mechanical, Biotechnology, Electrical & Electronics with 60 % marks. [For SC/ST candidates’ minimum mark is 50% (CGPA 5.5 /10)].

M.Sc.(Tech.) – Polymer Science & Technology:
Bachelor’s degree with Chemistry (Main) and Mathematics/ Computer Science/ Physics/ Statistics (subsidiary) OR Bachelor’s degree through Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (three main system), with 60% marks (6.5/10CGPA). [For SC/ST candidates 50% (CGPA 5.5/10)].

SELECTION OF CANDIDATES

M. Tech. Programmes:
Selection of candidates who are qualified in GATE is based on their GATE Score subject to eligibility and availability of seats. For Sponsored Candidates and Foreign Nationals GATE Score is not required. Selection of these candidates is based on marks in the qualifying examination and/or performance in the interview.

M.Sc. (Tech.) Programmes:
Selection of candidates is based on marks in the qualifying examination and performance in the Test/ Interview.

Test/ Counselling/ Admission

Eligibility for test/counselling/admission and call letter for test/counselling can be downloaded from the website after login using application number and date of birth. There is no separate call letter dispatched. All those who are called for counselling/admission will have to produce the original certificates and other documents. Admission is subject to satisfying the requirements and the call for Test/Interview/counselling does not guarantee admission. Candidates offered admission would have to remit the fees on the day of admission. The Schedule of Test/Interview/Counselling/Admission for PG programmes is planned during June/July 2010.

ADMISSION TO M.Sc. (Tech.) PROGRAMME 2011-12

Original Documents to be brought by the candidates at the time of admission:

  • Admission Call Letter.
  • Proof of Date of Birth (SSLC or equivalent Certificate).
  • Mark list of the qualifying examination and Degree certificate.
  • Candidates who are appearing for their final examination and are awaiting results should produce all original mark lists up to and including pre final semester/ year. Such candidates will be considered for provisional admission provided they will be able to submit the final degree certificate / provisional certificate by 15 October 2011 .They have to produce a certificate from the Head of the Institution stating that he/ she has appeared/appearing for the final semester / year examination of the qualifying degree.
  • Conduct / Character certificate from the Head of the Institution/ Organization last attended/ working issued within Last six months.
  • Community Certificate, in the case of SC/ST candidate, from a competent authority (not below the rank of Tahsildar).
  • Community Certificate, in the case of OBC candidate, from a competent authority (not below the rank of Tahsildar) indicating the status regarding Creamy Layer based on financial year ending March 31, 2011.
  • Transfer / leaving Certificate from the institution last attended.
  • Ten passport size photographs and one stamp size photograph at the time of admission.
  • If any certificate is in a language other than English, an English version of that certificate attested by the processing center should be produced compulsorily.

MCA
Admission to the MCA programme is done through the NIMCET conducted by the NITs. The first NIMCET in 2006 was conducted by NIT Calicut. Faculty from other institutes work as research scholars in NITC under the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP). It is the national coordination centre for the QIP of polytechnic institutes.

ADMISSION TO MCA POGRAMME 2011-12

Original Documents to be brought by the candidates at the time of admission:

  • Admission letter issued by Counselling Centre.
  • NIMCET11 Call letter/ Rank Card and NIMCET Admit Card.
  • Fee receipt towards Initial fee deposits issued by the Counselling Centre.
  • Proof of Date of Birth (SSLC or equivalent Certificate).
  • Plus Two or equivalent certificate in original.
  • Mark sheet and Pass certificate of the qualifying examination.
  • Conduct / Character certificate from the Head of the Institution/ Organization last attended/ working issued within last six months.
  • Transfer/leaving Certificate from the institution last attended.
  • Community Certificate, in the case of SC/ST candidate, from a competent authority (not below the rank of Tahsildar).
  • Community Certificate in the case of OBC candidates from a competent authority (not below the rank of a Tahsildar) indicating the status regarding Creamy Layer based on financial year ending March 31, 2011.
  • Course completion certificate from the Head of the Institution and attested copies of mark lists up to and including the last examination for which result have been declared, in the case of candidates who have appeared or will be appearing in the qualifying examination. Such candidates will be considered for provisional admission. Any candidate admitted provisionally, subject to his/her producing provisional certificate and mark lists as proof of having satisfied the eligibility criteria, shall have to discontinue the course, if he/she does not produce the provisional certificate and mark lists within 15th October 2011. Such candidates will not be eligible for any refund of fees paid by him/her.
  • Certificate from the competent authority, in the case of Physically Handicapped candidate.
  • Ten copies of recent passport size photograph and one stamp size photograph.

If any certificate is in a language other than English, an English version of that certificate attested by the processing center should be produced compulsorily.

Candidates selected based on NIMCET Counselling, who do not report by the time specified, will loose the claim for admission. The seats thus falling vacant will be treated as dropout seats.

Refund Rules

Cheques will be sent to the candidates, who could not be allotted a seat by NIMCET11 Headquarter, at their address of correspondence as submitted by them during the Counselling Process.
Candidates who are allotted a seat in the first/second round of counselling and are (i) not willing to take admission or (ii) have reported/remote reported after allotment but do not join the allotted NIT, will get the refund cheques from NIMCET11 Headquarters after receipt of the report from the allotted NIT.
*Withdrawal of candidate after taking admission in NIT Calicut is as per the existing rules of the Institute.

MBA
Admission Criteria

Aspirants who have qualified for the award of Bachelor’s Degree in any branch of Engineering/Technology/Architecture duly recognized by AICTE/any other regulatory authority of Government of India (minimum four years full time after 10+2) and appeared for Common Admission Test conducted by IIMs are eligible to apply for MBA at NITC-SOMS. Admissions are based on creditable performance in CAT, bachelor’s degree examination, group discussion and interview. Group discussion and interview will be held at Calicut/Delhi/ Mumbai/Chennai/Hyderabad/Kolkata. Candidates selected for admission should submit all original certificates including the degree certificate at the time of reporting for admission failing which the offer of admission will stand cancelled.

Evaluation/Assessment

The assessment for the performance of the applicants in CAT/GD/Interview/Graduation /Work Experience will be for 200 marks as given below:

Intake
The intake for MBA for the year 2011-13 is 30. Reservation to OBC, SC, ST and differently-abled (DA) candidates are as per the norms of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

Structure of the MBA Programme

The structure of the full time MBA programme is designed to comprise six semesters spanning over two academic years, each being of 10 – 12 weeks duration.

The application can be accessed from the website www.soms.nitc.ac.in or www.nitc.ac.in and the printed datasheet should be sent to the Coordinator – MBA Admissions, School of Management Studies, National Institute of Technology Calicut, Calicut-673 601, Kerala, India latest by 25th February 2011 along with a demand draft for Rs. 1000 for Open & OBC and Rs. 500 for SC/ST candidates drawn in favour of THE DIRECTOR, NIT CALICUT and payable at CALICUT. Applications which are incomplete/defective/received late will be rejected summarily and no correspondence will be entertained on such applications.

The candidates for Ph.D. Programmes may be offered admission, based on certain minimum academic requirements to be satisfied by the candidates as given below:
The maximum age for admission to Ph.D. programme is 50 years.

I. Faculty of Engineering:
M.Tech. Degree in Engineering/Technology in the appropriate branch of study with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) [For SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 50% (CGPA 5.5/10)].

II. Faculty of Architecture:
Master’s degree in Architecture/Design/Planning/Engineering/Technology or its equivalent with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) [For SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 50% (CGPA 5.5/10)].

III. Faculty of Nanoscience & Technology

M.Tech. Degree in any discipline of Engineering/Technology/Nanoscience & Technology with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) [For SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 50% (CGPA 5.5/10)].
OR

Master’s degree in Chemistry/Physics/Life science/Nanoscience and Technology with first class or minimum 60 % marks (CGPA 6.5/10) or equivalent, [for SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 50% (CGPA 5.5/10)] and a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/KCTE fellowship in the relevant area, tenable from the current year.
Candidates applying for External and Part-time scheme of registration do not require GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/KSCTE fellowship.

IV. Faculty of Biotechnology
M.Tech. Degree in Biotechnology/Life Science with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) [For SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 50% (CGPA 5.5/10)].
OR

Master’s degree in Life science with first class or minimum 60 % marks (CGPA 6.5/10) or equivalent, [for SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 50% (CGPA 5.5/10)] and a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/KCSTE in the relevant area,tenable from the current year.
Candidates applying for External and Part-time scheme of registration do not require GATE score or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/NET/KCSTE fellowship.

V. Faculty of Science (Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics)
Master’s degree in Mathematics/Statistics/Chemistry/Physics with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5/10) or equivalent, (for SC/ST candidates, the minimum mark is 50% (CGPA 5.5/10)] and a valid GATE score/ NET qualified or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/KCSTE fellowship in the relevant areas tenable from the current year.
Candidates applying for External and Part-time scheme of registration do not require GATE score/ NET qualification or UGC/CSIR/NBHM/KCSTE.

SELECTION OF CANDIDATES

The admission to Ph.D. Programmes will be on the basis of written test and/or interview, by the respective Department/School.

SALIENT FEATURES OF Ph.D. PROGRAMMES

Ph.D. Programmes of the Institute are structured around certain minimum number of theory courses, which have to be passed by the scholars, a comprehensive viva-voce examination, a pre-Ph.D. examination and a Thesis work, which will be examined by a Thesis Board and an Oral Board. Only on the basis of the successful completion of all the Graduation Requirements, a scholar will be awarded Ph.D. degree by the Board of Governors of the Institute based on the recommendation of the Senate.

Semester Registration

Every scholar whether working on Full Time or Internal or External or Part-time registration scheme will have to register every semester till the submission of thesis, by payment of tuition and other fees as applicable, on the date announced for registration. Generally, registration for Monsoon semester will be in July/August and Winter semester in December/January.

Course Work and Thesis Work Requirements

Each scholar admitted to Ph.D. programme must necessarily earn a certain minimum number of credits through course work and research work as given in the table below:

All research scholars will have to credit all the courses prescribed for study and obtain a minimum letter grade of C in each subject and must obtain at least an overall CGPA of 7.0. The minimum residential requirement for External and Part-time Scheme Scholars is one semester.

Monitoring the Work and Progress

Each research scholar will be assigned a Supervisor (Not more thantwo) by the Department. The work and progress of the scholars will be monitored by a Doctoral Committee specially appointed for each scholar. Only with the approval of the Doctoral Committee, the courses of study shall be prescribed and the Doctoral Thesis approved for submission. The work and progress of the scholars in each semester will be assessed by the Doctoral Committee and the thesis supervisor and only on satisfactory progress as approved by the Doctoral Committee, the scholars will be allowed to continue in the programme.

Eligibility for the Award of Degree

The Ph.D. thesis submitted by the scholar will be evaluated by two external examiners, one from India and another from abroad, both being experts in the concerned area of the research. On receipt of satisfactory thesis evaluation reports from both the examiners, an Oral Examination Board will be constituted by the Chairman Senate for the conduct of the thesis defense /oral examination.

The members of the Board will include one of the external examiners, thesis supervisor(s) and another examiner appointed by the Chairman of the Senate with the Head of the Department (if he is a guide then the former Head) as Chairman. The scholar will be declared eligible for the award of the degree only if the Oral Examination Board recommends the same after successful defense of the thesis and has completed other requirements as per the Ph.D. regulations.

Graduation Requirements

All Ph.D. scholars irrespective of the type of registration will have to complete the following requirements for Graduation:
Credited the minimum number of theory courses prescribed and earned the minimum CGPA stipulated.
Successfully completed the Comprehensive Viva-Voce Examination.
Presented a Work on Account report and completed the Pre-Ph.D. Examination.
Successfully presented an Open Defense of his/her thesis.
Obtained positive recommendations both from the external examiners and the Oral Examination Board.

PGDCM – Post Graduate Diploma in Construction Management

ELIGIBILITY

B.Tech in Civil Engineering / Mechanical Engineering / Electrical Engineering / B.Arch. with a minimum aggregate mark of 60% or CGPA of 6.5 /10. Selection will be based on written test in Basic Civil Engineering / Group Discussion / Interview.

Final semester students can also apply provided their final marks are made available within three months from date of joining. Such candidates may be considered for provisional admission. However, these candidates must have successfully passed with 60% mark in one to six semesters of B.Tech/BE or three years of Engineering studies on the date of application and the application must include attested copies of the mark lists and course completion certificate from the Head of the Institution last attended in the prescribed format.

Any candidate admitted provisionally, subject to his/her producing provisional certificate and mark lists as proof of having satisfied the eligibility criteria, shall have to discontinue the course, if he/she does not produce the provisional certificate and mark lists within three months of date of joining. Such candidates will not be eligible for any refund of fees paid by him/her. Provisional admission is not applicable to candidates who have failed in the qualifying examination and subsequently appeared for the supplementary examination.

The application form and instructions are available in the Department webpage (http://nitc.ac.in/nitc/dept/ce/public_html/index.html). Candidates can download the application form from the above site or collect in person from office of Department of Civil Engineering.

A self attested passport size photograph taken not earlier than 3 months is to be affixed on the application from. Additional six copies of the same photograph and one stamp size photograph should be produced at the time of counseling/admission.

Demand Draft towards application fee (Rs. 600/-) drawn in favour of Director, NIT Calicut payable at State Bank of India, NIT Calicut Branch (Code No. 2207) is to be enclosed.

The following documents (whichever is applicable) arranged in the order given below are to be enclosed along with the application during submission.

  • Self attested copy of mark lists & degree certificate of the qualifying examination.
  • Course completion certificate from the Head of the Institution in the prescribed format and attested copies of mark lists including sixth semester/third year (B.Tech/ BE degree course), in the case of candidates who have appeared or will be appearing in the qualifying examination. This is also applicable to candidates who have not procured the provisional/degree certificate.
  • Self attested copy of mark lists and diploma certificate in the case of lateral entry candidates.
  • Self attested copy of proof of date of birth.
  • Original sponsorship certificate in the case of sponsored candidates.
  • Demand draft towards application fee.
