B. Tech course in Biotechnology has been started from 2005 with intake of 60 students. The department strives to emerge as a leader in providing excellent education in Biotechnology and to develop cutting-edge technology through research, training and technical innovation. The department has highly qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty to provide both classroom teaching and practical instructions.
The department actively engages in relevant, contemporary and state-of-the-art research with several scholars enrolled for the Ph.D. program. Research is going on in the department in different areas of Biotechnology including Environmental Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, Molecular Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology etc.
Since commencement, the department has performed consistently well both in academics and extra-curricula. While two of the students have been nominated for the prestigious KVPV fellowship by the Govt. of India, several have gone out in the professional world already and presented their research in technical symposia around the country. A number of our students are members of various organizations both in and beyond their core-biotechnology fields, namely the Literary Circcle, the drama Society, the Centre for Cognitive Activities and Linux Users Group.
The department is starting the M.Tech. Program in 2009, The department also promotes sharing of knowledge through summer schools, conference, seminars and symposia. The department looks forward to another glorious year of teaching, learning, perfoming and growing.
The Department of Chemical Engineering of National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, was established with active support of UNESCO. The department was built up by a team of dedicated faculty members wit the help of a host of visiting professors deputed by UNESCO to NIT Durgapur. Some of the faculty members were trained abroad under UNESCO programme, and a number of equipment and instruments were donated by UNESCO to the department. The B.E. course in Chemical Engineering was started in 1964, and the first batch of students were awarded the degree in 1969. The Post-graduate programme with the specialisation ‘Production Fertilisers’ was introduced in 1968, along with the doctoral programme in Chemical Engineering. The department has a sanctioned intake of 30 students for the B.E. course per year. For admission to the M. Tech. course, 10 seats are available in regular full-time course with a duration of 1.5 years, while 10 seats are reserved for part-time students from industries with a course duration of 3 years. Cirriculum and syllabi of the courses offered were continuously updated over the years to keep pace with rapidly changing technological developments. Since 1999 new curricula and syllabi were implemented in the college for undergraduate studies.
Dept of Chemistry
Since inception of institute the Department has been sincerely teaching the students of different engineering courses both UG and PG levels. The Department started Post Graduate Programme in Corrosion Science & Technology since 1987. Besides teaching, the highly qualified and energetic faculty member of the Department have contribute a lot to elevate the prestige of the institute through their research activities of international standard.

UG, PG and research laboratories are equipped with modern sophisticated instruments like UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, FTIR Spectrophotometer, Electrochemical analyzer, Silicon Graphics Lypholizer, Ultra centrifuge, Fraction collect, Sonicator etc.
The Department of Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering is one of the oldest functioning Departments with UG course since inception. The Department started imparting instruction leading to M.Tech Degree since 1956 with its highly qualified faculties and well equipped state-of-the-art UG labs and one PG Laboratory. Presently the Department is acting as State Technical Agency (STA) under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The Department is also engaged in regular testing and consultancy activities in various fields of Civil Engineering.
Laboratories: Concrete and Structural Engg., Highway Engg., Surveying, Environmental Engg., Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engg., Rock Mechanics and Water Resources Engineering.
Important equipment and software: Digital tri-axial testing machine, 300t compression testing machine, Fly ash brick moulding machine including pan mixer, Ultrasonic concrete tester, Profometer, Resistivity meter, Corrosion analyzing equipment (half cell), Schmidt hammer, Benkelman beam, Microprocessor based digital bump integrator, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Multiparameter instrument, Precision integrating sound level meter, Hand held GPS, Total station, Versatile Open Channel Flow Set-up, STAAD-Pro, CASTER and Geomatica.
Master of Computer Application
The department has been offering postgraduate course in Computer Application since 2000.within a very short span of time, the department has created an excellent learning environment with dedicated young faculty members, technical staff, ‘state-of-the-art’ laboratories and innovative academic processes
The department provides computational facilities for application development and research. Full fledged FPGA implementation and development facilities linked with embedded system tool and MATLAB provides a smooth platform for ambitious developers. For application level developers, complete enterprise level suites such as J2EE and Microsoft.net platform (along with visual studio.net) are available. For research, the department provides advanced simulation platform for networking communication system, network security etc .MATLAB with toolboxes for image processing, communication, signal processing neural network & ORACLE are available for DBMSl modeling and experimentation. Experts from various company frequently conduct special classes on special platforms and tools for student of the department.

Dept of Geology
The Department is supporting the UG courses of the Institute offering a compulsory subject to all First Semester students on environment. It also caters specifically to Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Civil Engineering students. The Department laboratories are well equipped to serve the needs of the students. The Department has Research Model Polarizing Microscopes (for both transmitted light and incident light), Student Model Microscopes, Polarizing Micro projector and rich collection of models, charts, rocks and mineral specimens. A well-equipped new environment laboratory has recently been set up in the department to augment research and consultancy facilities in this emerging field.
The Department is playing an important role as the coordinating department in the introduction of a new multidisciplinary M.Tech programme in “Environmental Science and Technology” from the academic session 2009-10 involving five departments of the Institute.
The Department offers facilities for research activities to faculties and research scholars of the Institute. Present fields of research include classical Structural Geology and various problems related to environment. Presently, five research scholars are carrying out their research in the department including two full time research scholars. The Department also undertakes consultancy jobs on solving environmental problems with particular expertise on groundwater study.
The Electronics and Communication Engineering course was initiated in 1983. In the early years the aim was in the development of a good infrastructural facility for teaching the B. E. course. After the formation of the new department in 1990 the development took a new turn. In the initial years there was space and fund shortage. After shifting of the department to the present location the space problem reduced. Funds granted for development of the infrastructural facilities were inadequate. Moreover in Electronics and Communication Engineering the technology is progressing in such a brisk pace that to keep abreast new equipments need to be procured every three to five years. Regular inflow of funds were necessary to keep the labs equipped with, state of art technology, instruments. The main obstacle in the steady growth of the department throughout its existence for the last seventeen years ? is shortage of faculty. This has hindered the growth of the department. Under all these constraints the department has developed facilities, which is imparting good training to the undergraduate students.
The PC lab of the department has been upgraded with Pentium III Computers and PCB- fabrication lab has been developed. For the development of DSP Lab an amount of Rs. 5.00 lakhs has been sanctioned. Utilizing this fund Four TMS320C5416 DSK kit, four TMS320C6711 DSK kit with code composer studio and four Pentium-IV based desktop PC has been procured for DSP lab. This would enable the students to get a practical understanding about digital signal processing. Faculty members, who desire to do research and development work in the specific fields can pursue with their endeavour.

Since inception of the Institute the Department has been catering its service to all the student of UG and PG courses. Besides teaching, the faculty member are actively engaged in research activities in the fields of Industrial Economics, Financial Management, Marketing Management, Operation Research, International Trade, Industrial Marketing, Risk Management and Capital Management.
The department has been offering undergraduate course in IT since 2000.within a very short span of time, the department has created an excellent learning environment with dedicated young faculty members, technical staff, ‘state-of-the-art’ laboratories and innovative academic processes

Department of Management Studies
Department of Management Studies came into existence recently within the National Institute of Technology aims to impart quality management and technical education. The offered from an electric mix drawn from a well developed body of knowledge coming from diverse background. It aims in developing analytical skills, functional skills, operational skills, leadership qualities as well as ethical and moral values within the students. The school boasts of a faculty from diverse backgrounds and it takes in students with regional diversity and varied educational qualifications. Semester I and II focuses mainly on the different concepts of general management education to give the students a good grounding in all the functional areas of management study. Semester III and IV provide an in-depth knowledge on various specialization subjects. There are a number of industry oriented subjects in the electives offered. Also a non-credit paper is offered to the students in both semester 3 and 4 to enhance their knowledge. the department grooms its students into industry ready proactive future managers.
Dept of Mathematics
The Department has been rendering commendable service to all UG and PG courses of Engineering since inception. Besides teaching, the faculty members are engaged in interdepartmental projects and research in the fields of the Operations Research. non-credit paper is offered to the students in both semester 3 and 4 to enhance their knowledge. the department grooms its students into industry ready proactive future managers.
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Department of Mechanical Engineering is the largest and one of the oldest departments of the Institute started in the year 1960. It offers both undergraduate (B.Tech.) and postgraduate (M.Tech.) degree course apart from doctoral programme.
The annual intake of the UG course is 90+ and that of the PG course is 15. At present about 14 students are doing there doctoral research with the department. The department comprises of well-qualified faculty, supporting staff and suitably equipped laboratory. The continuous development of faculty and up gradation of the laboratories makes the department at per with the current day academic and research requirement of global standard which is reflected by continuously increasing student of the department opting for higher studies in India and abroad.
Department of Mechanical Engineering offers one PG course with specialization: Machine Design and Production. For the benefit of the students who are at the Industry or in other Institute nearby, the department runs a parallel module of part time course. This overview contains the curriculum of the UG and PG courses, profile of the faculty, a list of the laboratories and the publications for the last two years by the faculty.

The department of Metallurgy, soon to be called the department of Metallurgy and Material Science Engineering Department has high level interactions with the CMERI, DSP and other steel plants in and around Durgapur. They provide testing and consultancy services to these institutions. The department has also been accredited by National Board of Accredition for 5 years.

Some of the great Physicists of the country have been associated with this Department over a period of more than 40 years.
The Department provides excellent laboratory facilities for both undergraduate and Postgraduate students.The technical and general staff of this Department are very helpful in the Physics lab for undergraduate students and Materials Science lab of M.Tech. students. The faculty members of this Department take classes and groom all the Undergraduate students of this Institute. Besides, this Department conducts M.Tech course in Advanced Materials Science and Technology.The faculty members of this Department are associated with a lot of research activities, often in collaboration with eminent scientists from different parts of the globe.
Research Arena: Nanoscience Laboratory undertaking studies of semiconductor nanomaterials and their optical and nonlinear properties; studies on functionalized carbon nanotubes and their optical, nonlinear and electrical properties. Theoretical MD simulation and DFT studies on mechanical properties of cnt and cnt-polymer composites.Studies on electrical transport properties of Polymers, and low temperature characterisation of nano composites and other materials are carried out round the year in the Low Temperature lab. Exhaustive studies are carried out in the field of Non-Linear Optics with the help of Nd:YAG and He-Ne lasers. Elaborate studies on Liquid Crystals are also carried out with the help of Scanning Electron Microscope and X-Ray Diffractometer in this Department.
