About National Institute of Technology, Manipur
The National Institutes of Technology are premier institutions of technology in India offering academic programs at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. Originally started as the Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs), they have grown in stature and are today rated among the top technological institutions of the country. In 2002, while granting them autonomy, they were taken under the ambit of Centrally Funded Technical Institutions of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and renamed as National Institutes of Technology. Further, under the NIT Act 2007, they were elevated to the status of Institutes of National Importance. Students are admitted to B. Tech programs in the NITs on the basis of ranks obtained in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE). While 50% of the seats are reserved for students of the state in which the particular NIT is located, the remaining 50% of seats are open for students from across the country on the basis of merit. Reservation of seats is followed as per Government of India norms.
National Institute of Technology, Manipur, a centrally funded institution is set up to impart quality technical education to various levels of higher learning. It is one of the ten newly set up NIT’s by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India vide its order no. F.23-13-2009-TS-III dated 30th October 2009 and 3rd March 2010. It has been established to cater to the needs of the thousands of students from the North East and outside in the field of Technical Education. With National Institute of Technology, Agartala as its mentor institute and tremendous support from the State Govt. of Manipur, NIT, Manipur started its first session on 1st August 2010. The Institute has been established under the Manipur Societies Registration Act, 1989. (Regd. No. 425/M/SR/2010)

The temporary campus of NIT, Manipur is located at the campus of Government Polytechnic, Imphal which is only 1km far from the permanent site. The temporary campus provides well-furnished hostel accommodation with round the clock power supply, water supply and internet facilities. NIT, Manipur has a permanent site of 138.2 hectares in the lush green area of Langol in Imphal.
