Central Library

NIT Patna Library

Central Library occupies a place of pride in NIT Patna and is an essential component of the institute’s outstanding research and education mission. It is a most lively place on the campus providing a safe, comfortable and friendly environment that enables learning and advancement of knowledge, and promotes discovery and scholarship. The mission of the Central Library is to facilitate creation of new knowledge through acquisition, organization and dissemination of knowledge resources and providing for value added services.

SECTIONS:
The Central consists of five different sections, which are as follows:

  • General Section (First & Second Floor) : consists of 40000 books (approx.), which are issued for 14 days to the students and for a semester to the teachers.
  • Reference Section ( third Floor) : consists of 1750 books (approx.), which may be. referred in the section.
  • Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (Sc/ST) Section (Third Floor): Consists of 4000 books (Approx) and issued to the concerned students for a semester.
  • Journal/Periodical Section (third Floor) : some of the ASCE and ASME And IEEE Prints volumes journals are available in the sections and current journals will be made available to the user very shortly.
  • E-Resource Section (Ground Floor) : The Central Library has a modem Electronic Library in the form of E-Resources Centre. It includes AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS (ASCE), AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS (ASME), IEL, IEEE/IEE, ACM, NATURE journals ..and many More, in full text subscribed through as core member of INDEST consortium. These digital resources are also available on the campus LAN.

LIBRARY LAYOUT:
The Library is spread over four floors with the total covered area of 19000 sq. ft. (approx) and is at the left side of the main entrance gate of the Institute. The floor-wise distribution of services and resources in the library are mentioned below:

  • Ground Floor:The ground floor houses the receptions counter, property counter, visitors waiting space and E-Resources Section.
  • First Floor:First floor houses the office, Circulation counter, stack area for General section { Books (from Class No. 600 to 999)}.
  • Second Floor:Second floor houses Stack Area for General Section [ Books (from Class No. 000 to 599) ] and Reading space for General Section.
  • Third Floor:The third floor houses the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (SC/ST) Section, Reference Section, Journal/Periodical section and Reading Space.

LIBRARY SERVICES:
Library provides Issue Return facility for books, reference service facility and access to all digital information subscribed by the Library ( in E- Resource Section) toall users (UG/PG/ Research Scholar/Faculty).

JOURNALS:
Some of the journals are available in journal section and current journals have been ordered for subscription by the Central Library . Central Library is also receiving some journals/news letters/bulletins on gratis/exchange basis from different Institute or Organizations.

E-RESOURCES
:
The library subscribes the following e-resources (journals) through the INDEST- AICTE consortium:

  • ACM Digital Library: It consist all types of journals, proceedings, books, technical reports etc.
  • ASCE Journals : Consist 30 journals of American society of Civil engineering, periodicals and transactions.
  • ASME Journals : consist 20 journals American Society of Mechanical Engineering, periodicals and also covers Applied Mechanics Review.
  • IEL (IEEE/IEE) : It provides the publications from Institute of electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Institution of electrical engineers(IEE) and consist 219 (approx.) journals, transactions, magazines etc.
  • Springer Links : This includes more than 1200 peer-reviewed journals, containing medicine sciences, Business and Economics, chemistry, computer Science, Earth and environmental Science, engineering, humanities, social Sciences, Mathematics and Physics.
  • Nature : It consist all types of journals.
  • Indian Standards : The Internet version of Indian Standards on hard disc and CD ROM offered through INDEST-AICTE consortium includes the entire collection of 18000 Indian Standards.

Hostels

NIT Patna Hostels

The institute provides residential facilities to students through three boys hostels and one girls hostel. At present Institute provides 29.37% only hostel facility for boys and girls both.Each hostel provides a central mess facility and 24 hours uninterrupted water and electricity supply.NIT Patna provides residential facilities to the student . The institute is having:
Boys Hostel

  • 03 nos. namely : New Engineer Hostel
  • Engineers Hostel -I
  • Engineers Hostel – II ( to accommodate 432 students)

Girls Hostel

  • 01no. ( to accommodate 118 Girls)

NIT Patna is in a process of constructing 02 (two) more boys hostels to accommodate 940 students and one Girls Hostel to accommodate 600 girls. The construction of these hostels are likely to start within three months.Each hostel is having separate mess run by private contractors and managed by Hostel Management committee.

Health Care

The institute has made arrangement for a permanent doctor who has a fixed chamber within the institute premises. He entertains students and employees for consultations on different health related problems for two hours every working day free of cost.The present health consultant has been an ex-HOD of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology, Patna Medical College and Hospital(PMCH).The institute also maintains a full time ambulance that is used for transferring residents of the institute to PMCH(situated at close proximity) in case of any emergency.

Computer Lab

Every department has a fully operational computer lab of their own to sharpen their programming skills and to get hands-on experience with the use of the softwares in their respective fields of concern.
EDA LAB-Electronic Data Automation lab is the central lab that is used for general information access and for carrying out various research work.The institute is presently using a 4 MB leased line on optical fibre from RailTel to provide Internet connectivity throughout the campus. This includes Wi-Fi connectivity all over the campus and Internet connectivity to every department and to the hostels.

Banking

The institute has a fully functional extension branch of Allahabad Bank within the institute premises which provides all the modern banking facilities to students and the employees in the campus.

BankA fully computerized full-fledged core-banking branch of State Bank of India operates in the campus. The students, staff and people of the villages surrounding the campus avail the facilities of the branch.Shopping CentreA portion of the old LTD building houses general provision stores, PCOs, Fax Centres, DTP centers, bookshop, etc.

Security

The institute administration lays utmost significance to the students, employees and its assets. Private security agency provides 24 hour security cover all over the campus which includes the hostels and the staff quarters. State security personals carry out regular patrolling outside the campus during night time.
