National Institute of Technology, Srinagar is one of the premier Educational Institutes in the Northern Regions of the country. It was established in 1960 and has been one of the eighteen Regional Engineering Colleges sponsored by the Govt. of India during the 2nd Plan. The Institute acquired the status of National Institute of Technology with deemed to be University status during August, 2003 and attained full autonomy in its Academics.
The Institute is situated at the the banks of world-famous Dal Lake, with the far-famed Hazratbal Shrine on other side of the campus. NIT Srinagar is a residential Institute with accommodation facility in Hostels and Staff-Quarters. There are four Boys and one Girls hostel which swallops about 1500 boys and 200 girls. Besides running the B.Tech Programme the Institute also offers M.Tech programme in many streams.In addition to that a large number of students are registered for M.Phil and Ph.D Programmes.
The National Institute of Technology, Srinagar, was established in 1960 as the Regional Engineering College, Srinagar. It was one of the first eight Regional Engineering Colleges established in India during the first Five Year Plan.The institute shifted to its present campus in 1965. As the Regional Engineering College, the college was affiliated to the University of Kashmir.The Regional Engineering College, Srinagar was upgraded as the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar in July, 2003.In the same year, the institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the University Grants Commission, All India Council of Technical Education and the Government of India. On August 15, 2007 it became an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Bill

National Institute of Technology, Srinagar is located in the Kashmir valley which is at the north of the country. Surrounded by the scenic Himalayan ranges, the institute is situtated at the banks of the famous Dal Lake. The campus is about 15 kms from the Airport which is easily accesible by frequently plying transport like the SUVs and autos.Facilities and amenities are available at the institution such as NCC, NSS, Bank, Consumer cum Society, Shopping Complex, Recreational Centre, Dispensary with Ambulance, Guest House, Students Activity Centre, Gymnasium, Internet Centre, Telephone Booths, Fax Services, Diesel Generator, Bus Facility. The Institution has an Industry Interaction cell which was established in 1989 with the aim to remain at the fore-front on the Scientific and Technological development and to share its experience with industries in utilizing. Man-power and other resources are available at the institute effectively with the assistance of the participating industries. The Institute has one of the best technical library in J&K State. It has a collection of over 60,000 books on Engineering Science and humanities and about 6,000 bound volumes/Journals, both foreign and Indian. The library remains open from 9.00 a.m to 10.p.m. It has on -line repository of A.S.C.E, A.S.M.E.A.E.L, J.C.C.C etc in addition to journals through I.N.S.E.S, COMSORTIEM. It also has a collection of I.S.I codes, in the C.D-Rom format.
Facilities include a Central Library and a Computer Services Centre with internet access, as well as the departmental Computer Centres.
The Institute provides boarding facilities to all the students and the faculty members, on the campus. The students also have the option to stay outside the campus as day-scholars. The Institute provides separate hostels for the boys and girls with separate mess facility.

- Jhelum Boys Hostel
- 8-Block Dal Boys Hostel (Staff quarters converted to hostels owing to lack of accommodation. )
- Girls Hostel
The Institute has a Maintenance Engineering Centre set up under the Indo-Italian collaboration. The centre will cater to the maintenance engineering needs of the Institute and as the region as a whole in respect of research, consultancy and academics.
The annual three day science and technology festival Techvaganza is held in April. There are exhibitions,and a display of technology from all parts of India. The festival is organised, financially managed and conducted entirely by the students of the Institute. The festival receives sponsorship from companies.

Srinagar has a humid subtropical climate (Koppen Cfa), with a climate much cooler than what is found in much of the rest of India, due to its moderately high elevation and northerly position.The valley is surrounded by Himalayas on all sides. Winters are cool, with a January daily mean of, and temperatures usually dip below freezing at night; Moderate to heavy snow fall is expected in winters and the only road that connects Srinagar with rest of India is cut off. The average annual rainfall is around 710 millimetres (28 in); spring is the wettest season while autumn is the driest.
