Department of Aeronautical Engineering

Started in 1962 the Department of Aeronautical Engineering has over the years adapted and improved with the fast pace of technology. A sincere and hardworking student body and wholehearted support of the dedicated faculty have contributed in no small measure to the professional successes enjoyed by a good number of individuals who graduated from this department. The department has been continually changing and evolving to meet the needs of modern industry and to train its students to pursue their goals with concentrated determination that has led former students to the greatest heights in their endeavor no matter what responsibility they choose to assume.

With rapid changes in the professional world the department has also focused on the drawing of the information age and has established new courses and laboratory facilities with the aim of supplying their students with every tool they need to succeed in the fast changing landscape of the modern professional arena. Thus the department ensures the students the versatility to adapt to the dynamic and fast moving world and its many industries.

Department of Applied Sciences

The department comprises sections of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Geology & Humanities.

The department offers core courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Geology and Humanities (Women in Third World development, Sociology, Micro Economics, Public Administration, Management Concepts & Practices, Entrepreneurship, Business Environment & Industrial Legislation, Economic Reforms in India, Organizational Behavior and Corporate Finance to all the undergraduate students. In addition several courses in Mathematics e.g. Numerical Analysis, Probability & Statistics and Discrete Mathematics are offered to select branches of undergraduate engineering according to the prescribed curriculum.

Courses in Advanced Mathematics and Environmental Engineering Chemistry are offered to postgraduate students of various branches of engineering.

The department provides facilities for research leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Commerce, Finance & Management and Engineering Geology.

The department has well equipped laboratories to impart practical training to the students in the field of Physics, Chemistry and Engineering Geology.

Department of Civil Engineering

The college took a plunge into the immensely refreshing and challenging field of Civil Engineering with the setting up of the Civil Engineering Department, right from the genesis of the college. The Department of Civil Engineering is excellently suited to meet the ever changing requirements of engineers with courses that combine the study of management, business skills and computers with engineering. The department ensures not only that the courses are updated, but also that they reflect the current needs of commerce, industry and the society as a whole.

Department of Computer Science Engineering

With globalization of the Indian economy, vast opportunities of growth have been thrown open for the computer software and hardware industry. Software being one of the largest growing sectors of the Indian economy, the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the PEC has been at the forefront of churning out software engineers with a high caliber of technical expertise. It continues to foster and engender the innovation and breadth of vision necessary to excel in the blooming software industry. The experienced faculty exposes the would be computer engineers to a rigorous and exhaustive curriculum designed to bring out the best in them and to keep them in touch with the latest state of the art technology.

Besides imparting theoretical knowledge, a lot of stress is laid on hands-on training and overall, development of the individual’s personality. The teaching programs has been devised keeping in view close interaction with the industry. The competence of the department is reflected in the growing demand for its fresh graduates. The number of recruiting companies has multiplied many fold in the last few years. A few alumni of the department are offering their expertise in the US with companies like MICROSOFT, SEAGATE etc.

The department strongly believes that neither the industry, nor the academics alone have the resources to adequately deal with the quest for innovative excellence in this field of computers, for global competitiveness. Hence the Institute-Industry interface programs enables the students to interact constantly with the industries. Equal importance is given to the classroom learning which is meant primarily for the theoretical or conceptual inputs of knowledge on a variety of projects.

The department has excellent computing facilities which include Pentium based computer systems, scanners, servers, multimedia kits, robotics lab ,Indy Graphic workstation etc.

Department of Electrical Engineering

Electrical Engineers are working today in all areas of our modern information society. Buzzwords such as the internet and the cellular phone, communication and navigation satellites, high performance computers, power plants and high voltage networks, renewable energy and robotics – in all these fields research, development and production innovation was strongly influenced by electrical engineers in responsible positions. Employment perspectives are excellent as not only in INDIA , but also in Western Europe and the United States of America, where there is a shortage of qualified electrical engineers. From the production of power in power plants and the distribution in high power networks to the customer with his PC in his house hold or office, it is electrical engineering that influences our daily life in mostly pleasant ways.

Electrical engineering thus is a very broad field, ranging from all aspects of information processing, power production and power distribution. The main areas are Electrical Machines, Electrical Power Generation, transmission and distribution, Electronics (including micro, opt and power electronics), communication technology, Microprocessors , Power systems, Real Time Systems, Neural Networks and Fuzzy systems etc. The curriculum of Dept. Of Electrical Engineering, PEC, is gingerly designed to provide engineering graduates, consummate knowledge and skills required for a successful career in the field of Electrical Engineering. The course is at par with changing technology and enables the students to easily manage to multifarious environmental teams.

The courses for the undergraduate program in Electrical Engineering is divided in eight semesters with 5-6 courses in each semester. The courses range from Electrical Power to Computer Aided Power System Analysis and Design, Analog Electronics to Computer Architecture, Digital Systems and Microprocessors, Programming Design Methodologies and Data Structures to Real Time Systems, Control Systems to Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic Systems etc. Along with technical courses, Management Principles and Cooperate Laws are also taught to students to acquaint them to the industrial principles.

Throughout the four-year program, students are encouraged to use their creativity and problem solving skills to explore and think about the unique problems in the world of electrical and computer engineering. Furthermore, students discuss some of the ethical dilemmas that are associated with engineering in general, and how these problems relate to our Social commitment. The Electrical and Computer Engineering concentration culminates in the Final Year . Students are given a wide degree of freedom to investigate, design, and build a project of their choice. The course Major Project Design Course allows students to apply their newly acquired technical skills to a full year design project .

The postgraduate program in electrical engineering is being offered with three areas of specializations namely Power Systems, Power Electronics & electrical Drives and Control Systems. These specializations prepare the students for today technology driven in 4 semesters with 4-5 courses in first two semesters. The thesis works spans over the remaining 2 semesters for an extensive study in the chosen area of research work leading to a thesis to be submitted at the end of the ME program. The thesis topics are given preferences which have industrial applications. The course ranges from Advanced Power System Analysis, Extra High Voltage AC/DC Transmission, Fast Transients in Power Systems, Power Electronics Control of Electrical Machines, Power Electronics Devices & Circuits, Electrical Motor Drives, Digital Signal Processing and Applications, Discrete Time Control System, Dynamic Systems and Control, Advanced Design Techniques in Control etc.

The Dept. gives its full support to the students so that they turn out to be the best engineers with flying colors in their lives.

Department of Electronics & Electrical Communications Engineering

Punjab Engineering College is one of the premier technical institutions of the country. It was adjusted the best technical institution in India for the year 1994 by the National Foundation of Indian Engineers (NAFEN). The department of Electronics and Electrical Communication, Punjab Engineering College, was established in the year 1963 with an intake of 30 students, which was subsequently increased to 60 in view of the competence of the infrastructure of the department. It is among the finest in the college having qualified faculty and well equipped laboratories. The department has always strived to inculcate the very best in the students so that they can face the challenges offered by the industry.

The department offers BE degree course in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering. Two fill time M.E. Courses namely, M.E. (Electronics) and M.E. (Electronics Product design and Technology) are being conducted in this department. M.E. (EPD&T) is being run in collaboration with CEDT, Mohali, under the Department of Electronics, Government of India. The department has facilities of research leading to Ph.D. During the last few years, nine Ph.D. Degree have been awarded, while some candidate are pursuing their research work leading to Ph.D. Facilities and expertise for research and consultancy exits in the areas of telecommunication, microprocessor applications, computer and microwaves.

The preeminence of the department can be understood by the ever increasing demands of its fresh graduate. Department of Information Technology

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Department of Mechanical Engineering offers 4 years B.E. Degree in Mechanical Engineering and M.E. Degree in Rotodynamics machines. The Department strives to impart quality education keeping in view the global scenario and social obligation. The track record of the department, judged by the employment potential of our students and noteworthy achievements of illustrious alumni, by any stands, is excellent. The department strives for continuous improvement in quality of education through curriculum development and up gradation of laboratories. The department can boast of very well equipped Heat Engines & Strength of Materials, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Hydraulics & Theory of Machines Laboratories. The department also has a well-equipped workshop that caters to the need of the entire college.

Department of Metallurgical Engineering

The department of metallurgical engineering was established in 1963 to impart quality education at the BE level. It has been upgraded to PG level in 1996 with the introduction of ME (Industrial Materials & Metallurgy). With effect from 1997-98 the strength of bachelors course has been increased from 20 to 40 due to the increased industrial demand. Over these years it has emerged as a premier centre of education and research in this field. Department has well equipped laboratories and highly qualified faculty. In addition, guest faculty is being invited from other institutions and industry to share their experiences and teach specialized topics in different subjects. The laboratories are being constantly upgraded and course curriculum updated to match the changing needs of present day industry. The graduates of this department have always been well received by the industry and there is hardly any industrial house in the country where its alumni are not enjoying high positions.

Department of Production Engineering

The department of Production Engineering is offering 4 years B.E. Degree program since 1967 with an intake of 30 students. In addition the department is presently offering a regular inter-disciplinary M.E. program in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) since 2001 with the present intake of 25 students.

The department has facilities for taking up Ph.D. research projects and industrial consultancy in the areas of Machining and Forming Technologies, Dimensional Measurement Testing and calibration, Plant Layout and Material handling, Tool and Die Design, CNC Machines and Robotics, Total Quality management, Total Productive Maintenance, Work design and Ergonomics and Value Engineering.

The students of Production Engineering are being employed in reputed organisations such as L&T, Mumbai, Maruti Udyog, Gurgaon, TCS, Eicher Tractors, Escorts, Voltas, Telco etc.
