Himachal Pradesh is a state in the northern part of India. Situated in the Western Himalayas. Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh. It is bordered by union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on the north, Punjab state on the west, Haryana state on the southwest. It also ranks as the second-best performing state in the country on human development indicators after Kerala.
According to the census of India 2011, Himachal Pradesh has a total population of 6,864,602 including 3,481,873 males and 3,382,729 females. At the time of Independence, Himachal Pradesh had a literacy rate of 8% – one of the lowest in the country. But by 2011, the literacy rate surged to over 82%, making Himachal one of the most-literate states in the country.
