The Institute admits nearly 500 students to undergraduate programs and another 150 students to postgraduate programs every year. Students from countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Mauritius, Malaysia, Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Palestine and Thailand also join MNNIT for various undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
The Ministry Of Human Resources and Development has awarded the deemed university status to the Institute on 26th of June 2002.The institute has been renamed as Motilal Nehru National Institute Of Technology and was formerly known as Motilal Nehru Regional Engineering College.
