Visva Bharati University – was founded in 1921by the first non-European Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Thakur (popularly known as Tagore). By the Act of Parliament in 1951 Visva- Bharati was declared to be a central University and an institution of national importance. The Prime Minister of India acts as the Chancellor. The Vice-Chancellor of the University is appointed by the President of India. The Governor of West Bengal is the Pradhana (Rector) of the University.
In May 1951, the University was declared to be a Central University. Visva-Bharati was granted the status of a unitary, teaching and residential university.
