Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) – A great visionary and social reformer, Sir Syed Ahmad Khand founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh in 1877. His objective was to build a college in tune with the British education system without compromising its Islamic values. AMU was initially affiliated with the University of Calcutta and later got affiliated with the University of Allahabad in 1885. In 1907, a school for girls was established. In 1920 the university was transformed into Aligarh Muslim University. The University has a unique position among the universities and institutions of higher learning in India.
The University is spread over 467.6 hectares in the city of Aligarh. AMU offers more than 300 courses in the traditional and modern branches of education. Students across India, and from other countries especially in West Asia, Africa and Southeast Asia study at the University. AMU has reserved seats in some courses for students from SAARC and Commonwealth Countries. The university gate is open to all communities, gender, and creed. AMU hold 8th position among the top 20 research universities in India. There are more than 37327, students, 1,686 teachers and some 5,610 non-teaching staff on its rolls.

A special feature of the University is its residential character with most of the staff and students residing on the campus. There are 19 halls of residence for students with 80 hostels.
