Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University was established in the year 2004 by an Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu. It is located in Melakottaiyur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The University offers various PG courses and M.Phil./ PhD courses for the students in Physical Education and Sports. At present, the University has three Faculties, five Departments and ten affiliated Colleges. Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University (TNPESU)
It is the first of its kind in India as an affiliation University, exclusively for Physical Education and Sports. It is a rare coincidence that the University has started functioning from December 2005, declared by the United Nations as an International Year for Sport and Physical Education. TNPESU Admission Process
Admission in TNPESU is based on both the merit of the qualifying exam as well as on marks obtained in the entrance examination. Application forms for admission are available online at the official website. Students have to fill and submit the forms on or before the last date along with the admission fee in the University. For various courses of Ph.D. programmes, admission is based on marks obtained in the entrance exam.

There are six University Teaching Departments in the University. The list of these departments is mentioned below:
- Department of Physical Education – The Department has designed a relevant curriculum that includes both theoretical and practical components.
- Department of Yoga – The graduates can become yoga teachers in Schools, instructors in colleges and Fitness Centers and Research entrepreneurs.
- Department of Exercise Physiology & Biomechanics – The programmes offered by the department will be on total fitness that integrates Medical Fitness, Nutritional Fitness, Physical, Mental and Social Fitness.
- Department of Sports Management and Sports Psychology & Sociology – The Department of Sports Management and Sports Psychology and Sociology will concentrate on turning out efficient Sports Managers who will be in-charge of various Sports bodies.
- Department of Advanced Sports Training & Technology – The programmes offered by the Department of Advanced Training and coaching are aimed at graduates aspiring to become coaches and trainers in various Sports disciplines.
- Department of Statistics & Computer Application.
