Necessary guidance is provided by the Department to the students for career planning and personality development. The campus interview with prospective employers are regularly arranged for the placement of students from all branches. These include Public and Private Sector Organisations, Multi National Companies and Govt. Organisations. During the academic year 2009-2010 the Institute has been able to place 91% under graduate students in various industries before they actually pass out from the institute.
Placements
The Placements activities are undertaken throughout the academic year for both, under graduate and post graduate students of all disciplines mentioned below:
a) Under Graduate Students : Civil Engg., Mechanical Engg., Electrical and Electronics Engg., Electronics & Communication Engg., Computer Science & Engineering., Metallurgical & Materials Engineering and Mining Engg., Chemical Engg, B.Arch.
b) Post Graduate Students : Environmental Engg., Water Resources Engg., Integrated Power Systems, VLSI Design, Computer Science Engg., Structural Engg., Structural Dynamics & Earthquake Engg., Industrial Engg., Heat Power Engg., CAD & CAM, Materials Engg., Urban Planning, Power Electronics & Drive, Construction Techniques & Management.
Activities of the Placements A gist of activities carried out by the Department every year is given below:
- Organising meeting with 3rd year students to appraise the procedure for Campus Recruitment.
- Preparation of a merit list of eligible students from all branches.
- Carry out correspondence with various Industries and organizations for inviting them to the Campus for placements of students.
- Follow up for finalisation of suitable dates of Campus Interviews in consultation with the industries / organizations.
- Arrange for and provide necessary assistance in the conduct of written tests , group discussion, and personal interview by the HR personnel from visiting industries and organizations.
- Arrange for display and dissemination of information related to the training and placements of students. The Campus Interviews for pre-final year students are arranged after completion of the end semester examination in May and continued through July onwards till March. To enable the students undergo summer practical training, the recruitment activity is temporarily suspended in the month of June.If the situation warrants, interviews are also arranged , in the interest of students, at the Corporate Office of the concerned industry/organization.
Dream Job Placements: The Institute has adapted “Dream Job ” Policy since last few years. The policy provides for eligible students to opt for the industry/organization offering a minimum salary ( CTC) of 4 lac per annum.
Overseas Placements: The students are also offered job overseas through campus. M/s Hasan Juma Backer Co. LLC, Sultanate of Oman, Muscat has been regularly visiting the Institute since last seven years and has offered job to several students.
Outside Examinations
In recognition to the reputation of the Institute and the availability of infrastructure, VNIT, Nagpur is usually chosen as Centre by different govt. / public sector organizations to conduct Competitive and Entrance Examinations at national level such as Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE), NITIE, Bombay, ( For M.S.E.B. ), M/s Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Mumbai etc.Large no. of students from various engineering colleges in and around Nagpur prefer the VNIT as the Centre. The number of such students is increasing continuously over the years, it is observed.
Training
Optional Training The students undergo Industrial training during summer vacation generally for a period of 4 weeks. This training is meant for the engineering disciplines viz. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics., Electronics & Communication, Computer Science & Engineering, Metallurgical & Materials and Mining. Although the training is optional, majority students take advantage of the same.

Compulsory TrainingMining Engineering Course
In keeping with the course curriculum, all mining engineering students are required to undergo compulsory training in mining industry. This training is arranged during every summer and winter vacation. Architecture Course The students of fourth year Architecture & Planning Course have to undergo a compulsory training for a period of 6 months towards the end of 4th year. On successful completion of the training, the students carry out a project of 6 months duration in the Institute under the guidance of the faculty at the Department.
Training of M. Tech. Students
While the industrial training for PG students of engineering is not compulsory, several students from various departments carry out their dissertation work for a period of about 4 to 6 months in concerned industries and organizations. This activity is coordinated by the concerned faculty from respective Department.
