Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University was established on 17th September 1994 at Nanded by bi-furcating the Marathwada University, Aurangabad.SRTMU has been granted recognition by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the apex educational body of Government of India. University has 300 plus affiliated colleges under its jurisdiction offering 146 programmes with student strength of 1.63 lakhs and 4000 plus students through distance education mode offering programs in science and technology, humanities, commerce and management and interdisciplinary studies. The main university campus is about 20 km south of Nanded township which occupies approximately 595 acres and there is a 22-acre, sub-campus at Latur.

The Sub-Centre of Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University at village Peth, Latur is unique of its kind in the state of Maharashtra for its origin, infrastructure, academic advancement and focus towards social responsibilities. The Sub-Centre began in the academic year 2007-08 by the Govt. of Maharashtra on the recommendation of the management of the University and of public demand to encourage, to support the students of Latur region in specialized courses after Graduation.
